Looking Forward: The Honorable Mel Levine, President, LADWP Board of Commissioners
As the Council continues to shape the next generation of future water leaders through its programs and partnerships, we’d like to celebrate the work of leaders laying the foundation for a resilient Los Angeles.
The Council for Watershed Health will present The Honorable Mel Levine with the Dorothy Green Award for his lifetime of environmental leadership through his service in the United States Congress, the California State Legislature and as President of the LADWP Board of Commissioners.
“Mel Levine's steady leadership has helped the City and LADWP navigate a wide range of challenges that come with managing the nation’s largest municipal utility,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “His wise counsel and exceptional judgement have been extraordinarily valuable in creating a more sustainable water and power future for Los Angeles -- and he is very deserving of this recognition."
In Congress, among many achievements, Mr. Levine was the original House co-author of the California Desert Protection Act - the largest land conservation designation in the continental United States. He also secured inclusion of Santa Monica Bay in the US EPA’s Estuary Protection Program, which was established in the Water Quality Act of 1987. In the California Assembly, Mr. Levine was chair of the Energy subcommittee and author of California’s Conservation Tax Credit legislation and California’s Solar Rights Act.
His work as LADWP Board President laid the foundation to reduce the City’s reliance on imported water, dramatically expand conservation efforts and invest in local water supplies and water quality projects, and replacing aging infrastructure. He has continued to have statewide impact as an extraordinary steward of the Owens Valley and protector of the Mojave Desert.
Once named one of the “100 Most Influential” lawyers in California for his work as partner at the international firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, Mr. Levine continues to influence and lead the largest municipal utility company in the United States to ensure a sustainable and reliable future for Los Angeles residents.
